At the launch of the World RX of Finland event in Helsinki, 2 WRX cars and their liveries were officially revealed – GRX Taneco’s Niclas Grönholm’s Hyundai i20 WRX and Jani Paasonen’s Ford Fiesta WRX.
Grönholm returns to the WRX as one of the favourites for the 2020 title. He should have been well in the fight for the 2019 title with RX Cartel’s Andreas Bakkerud and the Team Hansen teammates of Timmy and Kevin Hansen, however he missed several rounds with appendicitis early on, dropping him out of contention. The fact he came back to take 2 wins and 3 podiums to finish best of the rest in 4th, just 25 points of the title shows just how fast he is.
Jani Paasonen is best known for his World Rally Championship appearances between 1997 and 2005, in which he races most recently for Škoda. He made 5 appearances in WRX last year with Team STARD, and has now acquired an ex-MJP Racing Ford Fiesta to compete in selected WRX events this year.
Paasonen then plans to run a full WRX season in 2021, and is assessing the idea of his team building an electric RX car for when the series allows both EV and ICE cars to compete in 2022.
These are the only cars to have been officially revealed, the rest of the so far confirmed lineup can be viewed below:
