W Series: 2020 Season Cancelled

The W Series has announced that its 2nd season has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The 2020 season of the all-female F3 series had been set to follow the DTM championship for 6 races, before moving to the Americas to support the USA and Mexican Formula 1 races.

However, the DTM schedule has changed drastically, and the overall uncertainty of the future of the German Touring Car Championship wouldn’t have helped the matter for W Series. As for the F1 races, neither USA nor Mexico City Grand Prix are confirmed as of yet, and what with the USA’s coronavirus issues and the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez Mexico venue being used as a COVID-19 hospital, there is doubt whether either event will go ahead come their original October and November dates.

The only W Series action in 2020 will be their planned Esports series, however in a statement from series boss Catherine Bond Muir, the intention is to return to the circuit in real life in 2021, announcing that W Series will support the F1 USA and Mexico City Grand Prix of 2021:

"After the resounding success of W Series’ debut season in 2019, our decision not to stage on-track races until 2021 is not one that has been taken lightly.

"However, we are already working on an exciting new W Series race calendar for 2021, and we are delighted to be able to confirm that W Series races will feature on the support cards of a number of Formula 1 Grands Prix next year, including the 2021 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas and the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez."

As for the lineup, it is unclear whether the top 12 finishers of the 2019 campaign, who all took up the offer to remain in W Series for 2020 without going through selection, will automatically be granted places for the 2021 season, or if a fresh selection process for all 20 places will take place.
