IndyCar: Laguna Seca and Portland Races Cancelled

The NTT IndyCar Series has announced the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey double-header event at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the Grand Prix of Portland will not go ahead in 2020.

Rising COVID-19 figures in California and its expected response has signaled the fate of the fan favourite Laguna Seca event, while an increase in crowd gathering restrictions in Oregon has caused the Portland race to be cancelled.

However, they will be replaced by making 3 other events double-headers. Mid-Ohio’s Honda Indy 200 will become a double-header, with 2 races on the weekend of August 8th/9th, the next round of the championship.

Gateway’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 will add an extra race to replace one of Laguna Seca’s races, while the second Indianapolis Road Course event, the IndyCar Harvest GP, will also have 2 races.

IndyCar’s press release said, “The cancellation of both event weekends was a mutual decision between the series and promoters following close consultation and monitoring of the local situation. The series looks forward to returning to both venues in 2021.”

Laguna Seca and Portland join the already cancelled events at Long Beach, F1 venue Circuit of the Americas, Detroit, Barber Motorsports Park and the returning Richmond Raceway.
